Before I start listing products that I like, please know that I am not being given any kickbacks from these companies.  I just thought it might be fun to do a take on the Oprah list of my favorite pet products that I seem to recommend over and over again.  Many are tips that I even learned from clients over the years, and it is my hope that you will find some of those tips useful.

Dogs and cats benefit from these.  If they will use them, it makes snacking more interesting and gives them some exercise.  There are many products out there not shown above, and I encourage you to check out pet supply websites.

Water fountain for cats DownloadedFile-8

Yes it looks like a urinal. But it is a nice source of fresh water, and cats seem to enjoy it.  It is always good to get cats to drink more.  Just don’t put it in the center of your dining room table.

DownloadedFile-1Musher’s Secret Paw Protector Wax

I recommend this to dog parents, especially this time of the year.  It protects the paws and pads from drying out and cracking in the cold, and makes it less likely for salt to collect and irritate the feet.

Finger toothbrushes DownloadedFile-2

I find this to be the easiest way to teach dogs and cats to have their teeth brushed.  If you never graduate to the long, traditional toothbrush, who cares.  At least you are getting some brushing done, which is better than never brushing. And on that note…

These Dentacetic teeth wipes are another easy way to get your dog or cat’s teeth clean.  It helps freshen their breath as well.  I use both of these products. (I guess I should not use the word easy… Let’s just say Easier.)

And since we are talking teeth: TD diet for dogs and cats really does work.  I use it as a snack for my dog. It is prescription, so make sure you don’t have any dietary restrictions to worry about, and ask your vet.

Keep them in your car.  How often have you been on a trip and used them? Love them.

dog wool coats

images-7I do think that if you are going to get a coat for your dog, get a good, warm one. There are  ones  made of the same fabric that horse coats are made of.  I personally do not dress my dog, but more power to those of you that do!  I actually like it when dogs come in wearing animal print clothing.  (Animal prints on animals… It’s just funny I think!).  Tip: A client once shared with me that, for small dogs, you can get affordable clothing from Build – A – Bear.  They have a huge selection.  As long as you are ok with faux leather bomber jackets….

Anything that will improve your cat’s emotional and physical state (more exercise) is good. Some are independent activities, some involve you, but all are recommended.

DownloadedFile-4crates: Who are these people that are able to train their dogs without crates?! It is inconceivable to me that they even try.  I love crates. My dogs love their crates.  They see it as a safe place away from noise and too much activity.  They use it as their own private, cozy bedroom. They use it as a home away from home when we travel (unless it is too big to fit in the car), and miss it when they do not have it with them. It is an invaluable tool for housebreaking training for puppies.

DownloadedFile-1Having said that, I still can admit to some unforseen “incidents” along the puppy training path (I have 3 children, who complicate the perfect plans I have to train my puppies). Thus, my other valuable tool is my Little Green Monster carpet cleaner.  I think all dog owners should have one. Cat owners as well (hairballs, urine…).

speaking of hairballs:

Laxatone is a product that most cat parents should have on hand.  If you have never experienced a hairball with your cats, you are lucky. If this isn’t helping, call your vet.

Oatmeal Shampoos:

They are a great base shampoo to have.  They will not dry out the skin, and are useful for allergic skin issues, which are common.

Seat belts, prong collars:

DownloadedFile-5With regard to safety, both your pet’s and yours, dog seat belts really are a good habit to get into using.  Also, I think that prong collars, when used and fitted properly, make it much easier to walk and control your dog.  I know that many people feel differently about them, but I have had countless clients come back and agree with me.  I use them.  Dogs should not be walking you.  I find that you pull much less on your dog with this type of collar (or they pull less), and actually hurt themselves more with choke chains.  And on that note, something I really do NOT recommend are Flexi-leashes. Any dog over 25 pounds can really pull you hard and I am living proof of the type of injuries that you can get if your dog takes off at something, and you are depending on your thumb to stop him.  Not a fan.

DownloadedFile-6images-8Seat Belts I have used this type of seat belt, and currently have another type that hooks through the car belt.  I will admit that I don’t always use it, but it is a must for a long trip, and it is a good habit to get dogs used to it.  I have seen many serious and fatal injuries to dogs that were in car accidents.  It can and will happen.  Think about it.

So, for all it’s worth, I hope you found these tips helpful or informative.
