I have been reading about many different cat adoption centers, programs, and spay/neuter organizations that exist around the country. It is wonderful to see such efforts to prevent homelessness and euthanasias of cats, not to mention overpopulation and conditions leading to the spread of disease in the stray population. I have mentioned a local rescue group I have worked with, Easel. It is nearby in New Jersey, not far from where I live.But I wonder if you are aware of Tabby’s Place in Ringoes, NJ. It is, in my experience, the most amazing facility, with a mission that I love. It is worth reading about, even if you don’t live in this part of the country. I wish there were more facilities like it. But, as you will be able to tell from the pictures, these places cost a lot. But they are clever in how they help sustain themselves. Looking for a cat? Tabby’s place is a cage-free sanctuary. It provides a refuge to cats in hopeless situations. The residents come primarily from public shelters where they had once been scheduled for euthanasia. It is one of a king in this sense. Once there, the center provides multiple services to its residents.
Adoption center: You may adopt there. And if you can’t take a cat home with you, they offer gift sponsorships where you can donate money to “sponsor” cats, and help defray the costs of maintenance of the facility. For $14/month and up, there are lots of options.
Hospital: Provides medical and surgical treatment for sick or injured residents.
Hospice: Provides palliative care and a loving, nurturing environment for chronically or terminally ill cats to live out their lives in comfort.
They do not turn cats away due to age, medical need, or “lack of adoptability”. It acts as a safe haven for several older, chronically ill, or handicapped cats. Special needs, such as heart disease, diabetes, cancer or blindness, are examples of cats that live, or have lived there.
